I think it’s important to recognize the employee individually, rather than waiting for when you may think is the best time to “praise” the employee’s company for reasons outside of their own development.
Yes, it’s important for the wider team to see the recognition too, but ultimately, you need to truly show how much you care and value the work of the employee on a per-reward basis.

Implement Monthly Tech Titan Awards
As the CEO of a tech firm, recognizing employees’ hard work is of utmost importance. Therefore, we’ve started the “Tech Titan Awards.” Every month, we identify an employee who has extraordinarily contributed to the team or project.
Most recently, Daniel, our software engineer, rewrote a piece of old, inefficient code, dramatically improving the performance of our main application. As a token of appreciation, he was given a state-of-the-art tech gadget of his choice. It’s our way of saying, “We see you, and we value your efforts.”

Ensure Impactful Recognition With Consistency
If you look at Gallup’s Q12 and the 30 years of research behind it, it’s clear that impactful recognition isn’t about big gestures, but understanding and consistency. They’ve found that it’s essential to recognize team members about every 7-10 days, but it’s equally crucial to ensure this recognition aligns with what your people find meaningful and are comfortable with.
I consistently advise my clients to engage in open conversations with their staff. Ask them directly how they’d like to be recognized. Some might prefer a quiet word of appreciation, while others might enjoy a public shout-out during a team meeting. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Tailoring recognition to each individual’s preference ensures it’s both genuine and impactful.

Promote Appreciation via Intranet Recognition
An employee-recognition system is in a place where a colleague can be chosen and recognized for a recent accomplishment. This recognition is posted on the employee intranet for all to see. The recognized employee is automatically notified via email about who recognized them and what they’ve been recognized for.
The system also sends occasional emails to employees as a reminder if they haven’t recognized anyone in a while, encouraging them to continue spreading positive words about their colleagues. It may seem simple, but I’ve observed the positive impact this can have on people’s day-to-day lives and the pleasant culture it fosters in our workplace.
