Artificial intelligence is changing how we work at a pace few organizations were prepared for.
Decisions are faster. Processes are automated. Communication is increasingly digital. In many cases, efficiency has improved almost overnight.
But something else is happening at the same time.
As organizations become more data-driven, there is a growing risk that the human side of work becomes less visible. Not intentionally, but gradually. Conversations become shorter. Feedback becomes more transactional. Decisions lean more on logic than on understanding people.
This is where emotional intelligence starts to slip.
And once it does, the impact shows up quickly in team dynamics, leadership effectiveness, and ultimately performance.
The quiet erosion of human connection
Emotional intelligence is something organizations should consciously decide to prioritize.
In the age of AI, however, it tends to fade in small ways.
A manager relies on dashboards instead of conversations.

People still:
- push for results or prefer stability
- focus on relationships or on tasks
- make decisions quickly or carefully
These patterns remain consistent, even as the tools around them evolve.
Understanding them is one of the most practical ways to maintain emotional intelligence in everyday work.
The risk of “efficient but disconnected” teams
One of the unintended consequences of AI-driven work environments is the emergence of highly efficient but disconnected teams.
Communication becomes optimized, but less personal.
Decisions are made faster, but with less alignment.
Feedback is given, but not always understood.
This often shows up as friction.

How to maintain emotional intelligence in practice
Maintaining emotional intelligence in the AI age does not necessarily require large interventions.
But it does require consistency in a few key areas.
1. Keep conversations human
Even when tools allow for faster communication, not every interaction should be optimized.
Leaders need to create space for real dialogue.
This means asking questions, listening actively, and checking for understanding rather than assuming it.
2. Build behavioural awareness
Understanding your own tendencies is the starting point.
Do you move too quickly for others?
Do you overanalyze before acting?
Do you avoid conflict to maintain harmony?
Frameworks like DiSC help make these patterns clear.
Once visible, they can be adjusted.
3. Adapt, don’t standardize
AI often pushes organizations toward standardization.
Emotional intelligence requires the opposite.
Different people need different approaches.
A one-size-fits-all communication style rarely works, especially in diverse teams.
4. Reinforce in everyday work
Emotional intelligence cannot be built through a single workshop.
It develops through repeated application.
In meetings, feedback, decision-making, and collaboration.
The more it is used, the more natural it becomes.
The leadership shift
Leadership in the age of AI is about complementing the technology.
AI can provide insights, but leaders still need to interpret and act on them in a way that aligns people.
This requires self-awareness, adaptability, and the ability to read situations beyond the data.
Leaders who rely only on information risk losing connection.
Leaders who combine information with behavioural insight create alignment.
A practical balance
The goal is to find a balance between artificial intelligence and emotional intelligence.
Use AI to improve efficiency and decision-making.
Use emotional intelligence to ensure those decisions work in practice.
Tools like DiSC act as a bridge.
They translate human behaviour into something that can be understood, discussed, and applied.
In doing so, they help organizations stay grounded in something that technology cannot replace.
Processes will become faster. Systems will become smarter.
But organizations will still depend on people working together. Emotional intelligence is what makes that possible.
